I reckon the updated Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is somewhat underappreciated by everyone involved. The race came back on the calendar thanks to Perez’s persistent never-give-up F1 career and sporadic podium appearances with turbo-hybrid era midfielders FIF1, poor Caterham never stood a chance (of a podium) in 2014, let’s face it. FIF1 on the other hand, they always had nice liveries, they used to literally stick out with their anteater nose design – 100% paint and not a bit of nasty bare carbon fibre all the way. This year Sergio’s popularity has been clearly eclipsed by that of Pato O’Ward, that’s a fact of life. We’ve seen more fan banners with “Pato, please marry me!!!” desperate pleas rather than “Checo, ¡Estoy loca por ti, muchacho!”
But that’s not the main thing about the hashtag MexicoGP. The main thing is the circuit itself. It’s a delightful combination of long straights and hard braking, with flowing sweepers in the middle. Obviously the last sector (Peraltada) had been butchered completely by the stadium section, despite its great atmosphere. It’s more akin to Monaco now (inviting you to park up your car during dying moments of qualifying, be it intentionally or unintentionally) than a deserving high-speed, high-energy, charging through, full beans, maximum attack ending to what otherwise would have been a great lap (if not the greatest!) in any generation F1 machinery, when the speed just keeps on building, you know the deal. I’d love to see that. One day. It’s a minor complaint though; 5 stars and thumbs up to Mexico. We like.
